This rare, one-of-a-kind piece of artwork was created by Cree artist Sally Milne through the ancient practice of birch bark biting. Birch bark bitings come from an ancient folk art made by the Ojibwe, Cree and other Algonquian peoples who bite down on small pieces of folded birch bark to form intricate floral designs. The practice almost died out, but there are about a dozen artists in the United States and Canada still working. Sally Milne is the best known. This framed piece was created in 1994 by Sally and has been in Marti Struever's personal collection since then. It depicts four bees buzzing around an intricate flower design - all handmade by carefully biting the bark. The piece is matted and ready for framing. The bark biting itself measures 6 1/2" x 6". It is signed Sally Milne '94. It will arrive with an original purchase receipt from Sally, an artist bio and a write-up on bark biting. A true conversation piece.
