Polacca Ladle Bowl from Wheeler Expedition

X2602

A pottery ladle bowl with a Polacca slip painted with the image of the katsina Qogolo. ca 1870's. This piece of history was collected on the Wheeler Expedition in which Lt. George Wheeler of the United States Army headed the fourth exploration of the American West for the United States Geological Survey. Wheeler was tasked with collecting an accurate physical description of eastern Nevada and Arizona, including topography, mineral resources, and Native American information. This little pottery bowl is part of what Wheeler brought back. This used to be an entire pottery ladle, but now only a stub of the handle remains. There is a fine crack from the red rim to the bird track on Qogolo's face, but it is stable. Custom museum quality mounting. This is probably a piece by Nampeyo. 4 1/2" diameter by 1 7/8" depth.
