Nampeyo Bowl of Black on Cream

C455

Another piece by the celebrated Hopi potter Nampeyo of Hano. This black on cream bowl is a Kayenta inspired design that we rarely see. The vessel is very similar to one in a published photograph of Nampeyo and Annie Healing sitting among a variety of pots. The photograph can be seen on page 75 in the book "Nampeyo and her Pottery" by Kramer. The bowl dates ca 1900. Someone once referred to it as Nampeyo's "medieval music" design as the painting looks somewhat like bars of music. The vessel measures 10 5/8" diameter. 3 1/4" high. The bowl was purchased for $8500 in the 1990's, so it is well below retail at $5500.

Sorry, this piece has sold.
