Jake Koopee Jar with Hopi Maidens and Pots

X4475

Marti thinks that this large jar is the best that Jake has ever made! There is just so much going on with this showstopper that Jake worked on from November to August of 2010. As a member of the flute clan, Jake often depicts water on his vessels as the flute clan was responsible for bringing water to Hopi. The top of this jar begins with squares near the mouth of it representing raindrops. Below the raindrops are 6 different colors of moths painted with natural pigment that are hovering over the ultra-finely painted checkerboard design representing water. The most important portion of the jar is what is painted below the shoulder beginning with a series of Hopi maidens (each with a different sash) and two flute boys (one of the few boys who appears with women in Hopi dances). Jake actually used his nephew as a model for the flute boys. Jake has finely painted 14 jars and 6 canteens on this piece, which the maidens will use to get water at the Hano water hole. Jake has completely outdone himself in the painting of these numerous jars and canteens. There's bird motifs represented on them, geometric figures, and even Qoqolo. Marti believes that this is Jake's "best painting yet!" Jake has also included a framing line or "lifeline", which is a series of fine lines (Jake calls them the most difficult portion of the pot to paint), and he says the more "lifelines" a person paints, the longer their life will be. The bottom of the pot has a beautiful blush showing that it was hand-fired in the traditional manner along with being hand-coiled and hand-painted with natural pigments. The piece is signed "Jake Koopee 2010" with a flute player, Jake's clan symbol.  Marti has even filmed a special video of the Jake Koopee jar.
