This is an early Hopi Patung (squash) Katsina. Patung katsinas are much beloved by collectors. This one is handcarved of cottonwood root and handpainted. The head is actually a small gourd that has been painted. The katsina is finely decorated with heishi necklace, feathers, and handfashioned leather strips with dangling metal cylinders and shells. The katsina is holding a small gourd rattle with feathers and a bundle of sticks. It measures 11" tall x 3 1/2" wide. It is 5 1/2" deep.
