Historic Zuni Frog Jar

C487

This historic Zuni jar with 3 raised frogs is quite important because the 3 frogs are completely intact. Normally, Zuni frog jars would be used ceremonially, and the frogs would then be destroyed. This one came from the ex-Rex Arrowsmith collection. He used to have a Santa Fe shop. We know of only one other frog pot, which is almost identical to this one, and it was in the Richard Howard pottery collection. The shapes on the jar may represent raindrops or water. We believe the piece to be an 1890's jar. It measures 11 1/4" diameter x 9 3/4" height. It was purchased for $16,500 in April of 2000, and 12 years later is priced below retail.

Sorry, this piece has sold.
