Historic Polacca Pottery Bowl from Wheeler Expedition

X2603

We know there are three of these important Polacca pottery ladle bowls from the Wheeler Expedition. Two belonged to our pottery collectors. We immediately sold one in our pottery sale, so we've been given the other to sell as well. This bowl is painted with a Polacca slip and has an image of a katsina. The significant piece dates ca 1870's and has an amazing provenance. It was originally collected on the Wheeler Expedition in which Lt. George Wheeler of the United States Army headed the fourth exploration of the American West for the United States Geological Survey. Wheeler was tasked with collecting an accurate physical description of eastern Nevada and Arizona, including topography, mineral resources, and Native American information. This little pottery bowl is actually part of what Wheeler collected and brought back to Washington. It used to be an entire pottery ladle, but now only a stub of the handle remains. It comes on a custom museum quality mount. The piece measures 4 1/2" diameter by 1 7/8" depth. It is, of course, unsigned. The bowl was last collected for $2500, and we're offering it at a very special price of $1950.00
