First Phase Navajo Belt Buckle

M4928

Here is a perfect first-phase ingot silver Navajo buckle. As such, we're dating it ca 1890-1910, a true piece of American Indian jewelry history. It is very simple but beautifully decorated with scalloped edging and stamping that shows great wear. The opening on this early piece is obviously cut out by hand with a chisel, and the very simple prong looks to be some sort of silver alloy, also hand-forged. It is unsigned, and it measures 2 1/2" width x 2" height. It would fit about a 3/4" leather belt end. Part of our summertime steals.
