Marti struever calls this coral purse "phenomenal" and a "major, major piece of artwork." Eveli Sabatie, of French-Moroccan descent and Charles Loloma's girlfriend from the late 1960's - early 1970's, created this intricate silver and coral purse entirely by hand after working with Loloma as his apprentice. The piece shows an incredible use of fine coral stones which Eveli handcut, polished, and assembled into a whole mosaic of coral. On the silver purse strap, every link is inset with a piece of coral that has been carved into two and three panels and then polished. On top of the purse is a coral emblem. The purse clasp is a little silver key with coral. When opened, there is a beautiful little red suede compartment just large enough to put a credit card, cash, lipstick and handkerchief in. Just think, there is no other purse like this in the whole wide world. Imagine carrying it to the Santa Fe Opera. The purse is actually illustrated in Marti Struever's book, "Loloma: Beauty is His Name". Eveli etched her name in the closing flap. It measures 4" width x 3" height x 1 1/16" diameter. The strap is 35". Surprisingly, Eveli had never made jewelry before she met Charles Loloma. Her work is very rare today as she has serious eye problems and stopped making jewelry about 15 years ago.
