Marti is thrilled to offer this very rare jar by Hopi potter Elizabeth White (also known as Elizabeth Polingaysi). Marti has had the opportunity to sell only a few Elizabeth White pieces in her entire long career. Elizabeth White was born in 1892 at Old Oraibi, Third Mesa. She went to boarding school in California, where she became assimilated in western culture. Once she returned to the Hopi reservation and began potting, she combined Hopi and western techniques. She developed the technique of adding applique items to her pottery. This buffware jar is a wonderful example of one of her applique pieces with its two large corn designs attached to either side of the jar. The rare piece is stone polished and stands 10 1/2" high. It is signed, "Elizabeth White, Hopi." A very special addition to our post-market sale.
Sorry, this piece has sold.
