Charlie Willeto Owl

X5116

This Navajo folk art wood owl carving is by the famed Navajo folk artist Charlie Willeto. Willeto lived from 1897-1964 in the Bistii area near Farmington, New Mexico. He only worked from 1960 until his death in 1964. The owl has feathers on top of his head, detachable pegged wings, and is painted on the front with an owl and on the back with stars, moons, more owls and mountains. Interestingly, owls are feared objects among Navajo people, so for Willeto to carve and paint this owl demonstrates that he was willing to buck tradition for the sake of art. This rare and incredible piece is 8" tall x 8" wide. It is unsigned, but unmistakably Charlie Willeto. It comes out of Marti Struever's own personal collection.
