We have several Depression era necklaces coming out of Santo Domingo Pueblo. Each one is absolutely unique in style. This one has a thunderbird inlaid onto a disc pendant that is inlaid with chip turquoise. The pendant dangles from a necklace strung of turquoise nuggets fastened by hooks at the end of silver cones. Common to all the depression era necklaces is an attempt to create beautiful jewelry out of found objects because they were created during a time when money and materials were scarce. Often the black and brightly colored inlaid materials were made out of plastic battery casings, toothbrushes, phonograph records, and plastic cutlery. The piece is unsigned. The pendant measures 2 1/2" diameter. Unknown artist.
