Navajo Coral Necklace 14 Strand with Jaclas

M2870

Here is an old Navajo 14-strand natural coral necklace with natural joclas. It is quite rare to have this many strands in a coral necklace, so this piece was certainly a symbol of wealth or status. The coral used is rare old natural Mediterranean orange tubular coral. This is a very traditional looking necklace with its turquoise jaclas intact. We assume jaclas were originally worn in the ears, and were attached to necklaces so that they wouldn't flap around when the wearer was riding on his horse. The spondylus shell bottom of the jaclas represent little corn kernels to bless the wearer. The 14 strands of coral have been tied together with a Native wrap that has been redone in hand-rolled, dark brown cotton. We're dating this necklace ca late 1940's-early 1950's - we didn't have much coral in the 1940's since we were fighting World War II against Italy from where much of the coral came. The necklace hangs 13 7/8" long (not including the jaclas). The jaclas are an additional 4" long.
