Hopi Chaveyo Kachina Circa 1930

X6654

Here is a 1930's Hopi katsina from the ogre family, desirable in his old-style simplicity. Many attributes of this doll, such as his bug eyes, white trousers, forehead with snipe track and moon symbols on cheeks, lead us to believe he is Chaveyo from First Mesa. Especially naughty Hopi children must beware of this katsina as he is known to be a ruthless and intimidating disciplinarian, likened to "the boogey man." Handcrafted from cottonwood root and hand-painted, this doll stands 6 3/4" high. This item is part of our Throwback Collection of American Indian art.
